Tuesday, June 5, 2012

Eleven Bistro and Restaurant (N2.196524 E102.246022) is located at Jalan Hang Lekir which is just about 200 meter from Jonker Street (Jalan Hang Jebat) of Malacca and they serve Portuguese Cuisine and western food. We going totake our dinner here after tasting the dessert from Uncle Keong Delicacies.

Eleven Bistro and Restaurant

The restaurant will turn into Bistro after 10pm everyday...

Ground floor dining area

One of the bar counter

The bistro area

Nice decoration and I like the setting...

Our dining area was at the 1st floor, and everything had been arranged nicely. The owner of the Eleven Bistro & Restaurant and Unlce Keong Delicacies are the same and they were one of the sponsor for the event.

The dining area at 1st floor

The area is spacious enough for more than 30 persons of our group.

Before the dinner serve, we finished the drinks on the table due to the Hot weather...

Grape juice was served on the table...

The appertizers

About 30 minutes later, the first dish served on our table was the cucumber with sambal.

We like the sambal very much!

Then follow by Spicy Mee Goreng (Fried noodle).

The Spicy Mee Goreng

The noodle was ok but too spicy until you can't really taste the noodle...

The Gula Melaka (Palm sugar) Chicken Wings on the next...

Gula Melaka Chicken Wings

The chicken wings were Special and Unique! That made the First 'WOW' among us!

Portuguese Deep Fried Squid

The deep fried squid was average, just like normal fried squid where we can have it in some seafood restaurant...

Portuguese Sambal Prawns

Portuguese Sambal was rather Unique compare with normal sambal...

The Fried Kangkong (local spinach) was normal...

Portuguese Special Curry Dable Chicken

The Curry Dable Chicken was Nice and Delicious! We like the gravy very much! Again, it was a special and a totally new curry taste to us!

Portuguese Baked Fish

The sambal and the gravy of the Portuguese Baked Fish was Nice but...too bad, the fish didn't manage well with muddy taste...

And lastly, the Portuguse Sambal Crab...

Portuguese Sambal Crab

Well, I have to say it again...I like the Portuguese Sambal very much! And the crabs were fresh!

During our dinner, I noticed one of us using chopsticks to enjoy his crab. Hmm...I learned a new method that day...haha!

Enjoying crab by using chopsticks...

Overall, I like the Portuguese Sambal. Most of the Portuguese dishes are spicy...as mentioned by Mr Lex earlier. Among all the dishes, the Gula Melaka Chicken Wings turned out to be the most Delicious Portuguese food on that evening! And the sambal...:)

Initially, we thought we might not able to finish all dishes which well presented on the table...but after an hour, there were only empty plates left on the table...

If you strolling along Jonker Street, just drop by and try some Portuguese Cuisine of Malacca which is different from the normal dishes that we have everyday...

Christian Witkin: Ethiopia

Photo © Christian Witkin-All Rights Reserved

"You can read people's faces, you can see how they treat themselves, what kind of lives they live, it's all in the exterior."

Here's the work of Christian Witkin, a Brooklyn-based photographer known for his advertising and editorial work for major publications, who's now returning to fine art, the foundation of his personal photographic work.

His current projects include a massive 16-year study of India, Women, Ethiopia and a Thai Ladyboy project. I was curious to see how an advertising, celebrity and fine art photographer would depict the beauty of the Ethiopian people, and you can judge for yourself how well he's done it.

I was very interested to read in article on Cool Hunting as to how Christian took a medium format camera to 14th Street (which is one of my favorites spots for street photography) in order to build his portfolio, and that he now uses a 4 x 5 Linhof Technika (a large format camera system) when he travels. He also espouses the style of rarely cropping his photographs.

The Thai Ladyboy portraits are also masterfully photographed and composed.

The first Delicacies served on the table was - "Lotus Seed & Lily Bulbs with White Fungus". Everyone have a small bowl of it...

Lotus Seed & Lily Bulbs with White Fungus

It had simple taste and nice. For those who like Lotus Seed, you will love this! Follow by the second meal of the day..."MISUA (Vermicelli) Soup with Mushroom". Tasty! Especially the mushroom...

"MISUA" (Vermicelli) Soup with Mushroom

After finished the vermicelli, it almost filled up half of my stomach...we started to worry about the others dishes....20 minutes later, Mr Lex introduced us their signature dessert - "Eight Treasure Ice". That was Great on the Hot Sunny day!

Mr Lex with a bowl of Eight Treasure Ice

Eight Treasure Ice of Uncle Keong Delicacies

This dessert has eight type of different beans and mixed with 'sour plum'. I like the special taste! We thought that was the last dessert we going to have in the restaurant, but...suddenly A nice aroma of Curry smell came from the next table, it was the "Spicy Curry Chicken Noodle". Oh man! We were Full at that moment...

Spicy Curry Chicken Noodle

I'm only tasted the curry and the chicken for once, not the whole bowl...well, it was really Good!

If you have a 'Big Tank' (stomach), I advise you taste all the above if you visit Uncle Keong Delicacies at Melaka. Don't Miss the Restaurant which established for almost 50 years!

The common scene during the session...every blogger busy taking photos before they taste the foods! Included me...:)

Working On Another Website

Sunday, June 3, 2012

No post(s) today...nor perhaps tomorrow.

I'm working on a new website (as if I needed another one!) for my photography which may see the day in the weeks to come.

New: One Image One Sound Stories

Saturday, June 2, 2012

Photo © Tewfic El-Sawy-All Rights Reserved

I am a member of Cowbird which describes itself as "...a small community of storytellers, focused on a deeper, longer-lasting, more personal kind of storytelling than you’re likely to find anywhere else on the Web."

I occasionally upload some of my photographs along with a short audio clip to it, and now have 9 stories under my name. The latest two are The Sufis of Cairo which I photographed (and recorded) a couple of years ago in one of the impoverished neighborhoods of Old Cairo.

I also uploaded another photograph of The Shadow Puppets of Kerala as well as an accompanying sound clip of the performance which we attended during The Oracles of Kerala Photo Expedition-Workshop.

It's really fun...and takes no time at all.

Sayang Sayang Youth Hostel @ Riverside, Malacca (Melaka)

Friday, June 1, 2012

Few of us had arrange for a night stay at the Sayang Sayang Youth Hostel @Riverside (Guesthouse) (N2.198207 E102.247963) located at Jalan Kampung Hulu of Malacca (Melaka). The Hostel is situated just next to the Malacca river, where you can enjoy the nice view partially of the river and it's just 2-3 minutes walk to Jonker Street, Malacca.

Sayang Sayang Youth Hostel at Jalan Kampung Hulu

This was my First time had the oppurtunity to try out the backpacker lodge at Malacca. The Hostel equipped with all the basic necessity and it's Clean! There's 'No shoes' between the area and it's a 'Smoke Free' Hostel.

Simple lobby area of the Sayang Sayang Youth Hostel

The basic information where most of the backpacker needs are all at the notice board.

Basic location map around the Malacca area.

This was my first time staying in the Loft! Haha!
It's separated by partitions from room to room and there's no window! A small sofa and coffee table at the lower level and after the 'steep' staircase, a twin bed on the upper level. The twin mattress was smaller than a queen bed?! I'm wondering....
Everything was A OK for the room especially the Air-Condition was Cold enough! There are clean toilets and bathroom on sharing except one of the flushing system malfunction. Anyway, it was comfortable and Satisfied!

Pictures as below...

The lower lever of the room.

The Steep staircase in the room

The twin mattress on the upper level.

The upper level is constructed by steel and it was strong and stable! We had a good sleep in the Guesthouse.

The corridor to our room

There are Total of six (6) Guesthouse and Motel in The Sayang Sayang Group at Malacca, to cater different type of tourists and customers. You can check it out from their official website below, their rates are reasonable!

I will recommend all my friends to try this unique guesthouse when they visit Malacca.

Rasha Yousif: Katha'Kali And More

Photo © Rasha Yousif-All Rights Reserved

As a photo expedition-workshop leader,  I very frequently see fantastic photographs by participants that make me wonder (after I stomp my feet in frustration) why I haven't shot them too, but I'm also glad it was these photo workshops that made these possible.

One of these photographs is the one made by Rasha Yousif of the Katha'kali dancer in full regalia, adjusting his belt. It was during The Oracles of Kerala Photo Expedition/Workshop™ this past March, and which saw us spending the better part of half a day with practitioners of this ancient dance form.

Rasha is a photographer from the island nation of Bahrain, and is a portfolio manager at a financial institution and has a Masters in Finance from DePaul University.

As Rasha writes on her blog: "One of the most memorable experiences I ever had in India was watching Kathakali dance performance. We had access to backstage makeup and costume preparations before the show. I came back from India with 6000+ photos I haven’t gone through most of them. I picked these two just to give a sneak peek of the photos that are yet to come!"

This photograph of a fisherman in Kochi is included a section of her iphone photography on the same blog,  and I encourage you to explore it...there are many gems in there.
